About this specific area of the body
Is the elbow a special area of the body for tattoos?
Due to the thin skin and small padding in that area, getting a tattoo on your elbow can be painful. In addition, two of the three main nerves in the arm pass below the elbow’s inner surface. This is why, usually, every full arm tattoo I send to my clients also includes a separate stencil for the area around the elbow.
Why is the elbow stencil sent separately?
Because, in this way, since the arm measurement of each person is different, the tattoo artist can place the stencil exactly around the client’s elbow and then continue with the rest of the inking work by applying the stencil to the rest of the entire arm.
A tattoo sample (draft) created by me, in Taino Polynesian style, with a circle of waves for the elbow
This is a custom tattoo with the elbow stencil separately. Also, in the tattoo design the client, and the tattoo artist, can see how the stencil for the elbow looks like.
Final considerations:
If you’re inexperienced with tattooing, you can consult with your tattoo artist and choose to use the separately stencil around your elbow, or continue the entire tattoo without using the elbow stencil. In any case, the negative space (skin) within the stencil can be filled even after the tattoo is finished.
