Custom Honu tattoo design process

This is an example of the steps to create a custom tattoo design:

1st step: Rob sends me an Easy Tattoo Form to tell me the tattoo he wants: he wanted a Polynesian honu tattoo for his calf, which would also include designs on its shell of a mermaid, shark, manta ray, gecko and Polynesian symbols of shark teeth, waves, enata (human symbol), koru (spiral symbol of ancestors) and some others.

2nd step: I do and email to Rob the first sketch of his tattoo.

3rd step: Rob’s answer: “Hi Juno, I love the design…I think you got it on the first draft! which of the symbols I requested were you able to include? I see a few; like the shark, it looks great! But where are the others? Can you circle them on another copy and write the symbol name next to it?” Rob

I sent Rob a couple of files with the sketch of his tattoo and some of the meanings of the Polynesian symbols in it.

In this tattoo, the client wanted a turtle as the main element on the shoulder and a shark, in tribal style, on the chest.

In this full arm tattoo, the client wanted a hammerhead shark as the main design on the outer forearm. Also, a Manta Ray with a small turtle on the shoulder.

This is a custom tattoo design in Polynesian style for a 3/4 sleeve, with Sagittarius symbol as main design for the shoulder.

In a Polynesian tattoo we can add personal symbols, in this case, the client’s zodiac symbol, in addition to the classic Polynesian designs of strength, shark teeth, ocean waves, spearheads, stones, Koru symbols (representing ancestors), Polynesian sun (representing rebirth) and others.
